Description
The Met x Eichholtz presents the Papyrus dining table, defined by sculptural form and rich materiality, bringing timeless elegance to the heart of your dining room.
Crafted from beautiful warm oak veneer with an expressive open grain, this table draws subtle inspiration from ancient forms. The base design reflects the organic geometry of a historic column capital in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, reinterpreted in a contemporary silhouette. Its presence is both grounded and graceful, making it a distinctive centerpiece for sophisticated interiors.
HISTORICAL PROVENANCE
The Papyrus dining table derives its name and design inspiration from a papyrus-motif capital that once crowned the column of a kiosk built for the Temple of Amun in Hibis in Egypt’s Kharga Oasis. The original column in The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates from 380–343 B.C. and combines stylized representations of the common papyrus with foxtail flatsedge plants—an early example of so-called composite capitals that unite decorative botanical forms into one cohesive design. Eichholtz honors this legacy by translating the rhythm and symmetry of the Egyptian capital into the sculptural base of this modern table.
